1. Tell me about the Andean Condor?

The Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus) is the largest flying bird in the world by wingspan, reaching up to 3.2 meters (10.5 feet). Considered sacred by Andean cultures, it is a symbol of freedom and power. On our guided birding tours at our reserve, you’ll have the best chances of seeing this majestic bird in the wild.

2. Where can I see condors in Ecuador?

The Antisana Ecological Reserve and Antisana Condor Observatory is one of the top condor-watching locations in Ecuador. Our Condor Tours are designed around the best viewing areas, giving you a reliable opportunity to see condors soaring above the páramo landscape direct from our Condor Tower. 

3. Are condors endangered?

Yes. Fewer than 150 condors remain in Ecuador, making every sighting special. By joining our tours, you also support local conservation and our reforestation projects that protect these incredible birds.

4. What time of the day is best to see condors?

Morning hours are best from 6:30am to 11:00 a.m. That’s when condors use rising air currents to glide effortlessly across the sky. It is also possible in the afternoon between 15:00pm to 18:00pm, where Condors return to their nests for overnight. Our itineraries are planned so you arrive at the right time, maximizing your chances of unforgettable sightings.

5. How far is Antisana Condor Observatory from Quito Airport?

Only 1 hour from Quito Airport, Antisana Condor Observatory is the perfect day trip. Our tours include comfortable transportation from your hotel in Quito, so you can focus on the scenery and the birds.

6. What other wildlife can I see in Antisana?

Besides condors, Antisana is home to carunculated caracaras, black-faced ibises, Andean lapwings, Giant hummingbirds, and even spectacled bears. In our Antisana Condor Observatory you can observe 95 possible bird species, 18 species of Hummingbirds, 73 species of mammas and more. Our expert birding guides know where to look, so you won’t miss a moment.

7. Do I need a guide to visit?

If you have a SUV you can go on your own, as the access is well maintained but smaller autos will not be recommended and having 4X4 is not mandatory.

However, we recommend visiting our Birding Reserve with a specialized guide which makes all the difference. You’ll not only spot more species but also learn fascinating details about their behavior, our reforestation projects and local fauna. .

8. What should I bring for a day trip?
  • Warm layers (temperatures change quickly at high altitude)

9. What is the altitude in Antisana?

Our reserve sits between 3,300 and 3,500 meters (11,000 - 11,500 feet). In case you have altitude sickness, we have in our cafeteria always hot tea and comfortable couches to relax. 

10. What’s the best season to visit?

Condors can be seen year-round in Antisana Condor Observatory.

  • The dry season (June–September) offers clearer skies
  • While the wet season (October–May) still provides excellent wildlife encounters.

It is important to reserve in advance to gurantee a spot in our Observation Tower, our tours operate every day of the year, with reservations only. Walk-ins are not allowed.
